A Civic Celebration of the Life of Del Martin was held last Wednesday October 1st, 2008 in the Rotunda of San Francisco City Hall and officiated by The Honorable Mayor Gavin Newsom. A Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trangendered Color Guard of SF Police and Sheriffy Deparments proudly display the rainbow colors of the gay pride flag, along side those of the American, State of California and City of SF Flags. The program featured an original Piano Instrumental by Margie Adams, Phyllis Lyon and her family, Sister Boom and her drums, Ellen Serling's fleugle horn playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Greensleaves", the Glide Emsemble singing "I'm Blessed" and "Total Praise", the Reverened Cecile Williams of Glide Memorial Church, SF Poet Laurete emeritud Jan Mirtikitani, Holly Near accompanied by Adrienne Torf sang "All That There Is"; followed by political activist and feminist Aileen Hernandez, Margie Adama singing "Woman of My Heart", Kendra Mon, Daughter of Del and Phyllis, author activist Jewelle Gomez, former Ambassador to Luxembourg James C. Hormel, California State Assemblyman Mark Leno, Linda Tillery and Tammy Hall, NCLR-National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director.The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representative could not attend due to the budget bailout proceeding keeping her away in Washington, D.C. and the various bills winding their ways through CongressIt was quite a moving experience and I am grateful to the writing and research of Barbara Price, Joan (JEB) Biren, Pamela Peniston, Jan Watson along with many others who produced this marvelous "celebration"*.The memorial's programme brochure feature many photos of Del Martin, many of the same featured in this memoriam presentation, and well documents Del Martin, born Dorothy L. Taliaferro, life through George Washington High School, SF State College, now SF State University, their lives in the Castro District, and many of Del Martins major accomplishiments including formation of the DOB, the Daugthers of Bilitis, named after an obscure book on lesbian poetry by Pierre Louys, her equal rights publication "The Ladder" founded in the 1950's, the Council on Religion and the Homosexual, "Lesbian/Woman" first published in 1972, her struggle with the American Psychiatric Associated to remove homosexuality from the authoritative DEM (Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), her role as the first lesbian elected to NOW "The National Oranization for Woman" where she fought homophobia, and her many honors including the Earl Warren Civil Liberties Award from the ACLU-American Civil Liberties Union; Senator Diane Feinsteins appointment of her to the White House Council on Aging and 2003's award winning Documentary "No Secret Anymore: The Times of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon"*Catherine Dodd, Joyce Newstat, Barbara Price, Diane Sabin, Jody Cole, the Astrea Lesbian Council for Justice, Alvin Baum, the Family Violence Fund, Evelyn and Walter Haas, Horizons, PG&E, Emily Rosenberg, Jan Zivic, Lisa Schoonerman, KT Graham, Connie Lane, Sean Areneda, Stacey Colbalt, Karen Cohen, Janet Moomaw, and many many others.
