Play For Today - The Long Distance Piano Player 5/10

A dingy municipal hall in a nondescript northern town plays host to Pete (Ray Davies) a phenomenon, a true one-off of Herculean proportions - at least, according to his loudmouth, cod-American manager Jack Burnshaw (Norman Rossington). Over the next few days, as Jack barks at nonplussed townsfolk through a megaphone while his gofer Alf (James 'Red Shift' Hazeldine) bangs resignedly on a drum, Pete will be attempting to break the record for non-stop piano playing. Why, apart from the 'uniqueness' of the achievement, no-one can be quite sure, least of all Pete's long-suffering wife Ruth (Lois Daine) holed up in a makeshift bedroom for the duration, within earshot of the relentless drone of Pete's playing. Locals seem none to bothered either - two old duffers dusting down the snooker tables in the hall chat idly about him because - well, he's being talked about, apparently.Info from TV Cream.Once you've watched it, could you give a rating out of five, just as a test. My Rating - 4/5Starring Ray Davies.C. BBC Television 1970.

SHOULD PEOPLE OPPOSED TO ANTI-SEMITISM SUPPORT ISRAEL?
How Israeli rulers and Zionist leaders before them have never truly cared about the well-being of ordinary Jews, just as American rulers like G.W. Bush and Dick Cheney don't give a damn about us.

Once banned, absinthe is back (at an ABC store near you)
For 95 years, Americans wanting a taste of absinthe had to sneak it in from Europe or Mexico – and risk getting the high-proof herbal liquor confiscated by U.S. Customs. In May 2007, government officials lifted the ban on the drink once blamed for causing hallucinations and psychosis.

You may think of him as over-hyped children's favorite but is WWE wrestler John Cena as popular in the US as you think? Schools and unions - Learning their lesson
Can a teachers’ union be an engine for reform? - The recent election of Randi Weingarten as president marks a new era for the American Federation of Teachers, or so the AFT says. For years teachers’ unions have been demonised as the main obstacles to school reform, often with good reason. Al Shanker, AFT president from 1974 to '97, supported

US Lawyer: American Military Jails are 'Legal Black Holes'
US human rights lawyers charged Sunday that US military prisons are "legal black holes" and the force is detaining journalists to "shut people up" about activities in Iraq and Afghanistan. A vast detention camp planned for the main US base in Afghanistan will be a "second Guantanamo" where laws do not apply, they said at a press conference.

THE DARK KNIGHT
American pop culture has no shortage of analysts, armchair psychiatrists, and critics. And I'm one of them. So as others have commented on the phenomenon of The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins, I am compelled to add my two cents. There's more here than just a good movie.

Iraq and Afghanistan - In the line of fire
Barack Obama describes his war aims which are still rather vague - IN 1960 John Kennedy won the presidency by, in part, making the counter-intuitive argument that his Republican opponents had been too soft on the Soviet Union. Obama seemed this week to be trying something of the same sort. Appearing on a stage with no fewer than 8 American flags,
