Seamus O'Brion and James Masten perform the classic Christian hymn, composed in 1779 by John Newton. For most of his life, Newton worked as a slave trader and was spiritually indifferent. However, one night, a matter of minutes after he relinquished his post on a ship's deck, his replacement was swept overboard and drowned. This episode sparked Newton's faith in Christianity, and inspired him to compose what is today perhaps the most recognizable hymn in the Christian canon.NOTE: Seamus and James have chosen to perform only three of Newton's original six verses (specifically the first, second, and fourth). The fourth and final verse in our rendition is of unknown origin, but has gradually grown to become one of the song's more recognizable verses. This may be due in large part to Harriet Beecher Stowe's inclusion of the stanza in her classic novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin."DISCLAIMER: Seamus and James do not wish to further any particular system of beliefs, nor alienate any religious or philosophical beliefs that our listeners may have. This song was selected for our repertoire solely for its beauty and its immeasurable importance to the American folk movement.
