Felix Weingartner (1865-1942) performing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with the Royal Philharmnic Orch. for English Columbia in Jan., 1927. This was part of a major promotional program by Columbia to issue many Beethoven works for his centennial. I had already posted the first movement but I got a request to post the whole thing because apparently this version has not been reissued. Weingartrher was the first conductor to record all of Beethoven's Symphonies. He recorded the Fifth four times; acoustically in 1924, and electrically in 1927, 1932 and 1933. The RPO in 1927 was a pick-up orchestra brough together for certain concerts. Their playing is a bit scrappy which is probably why this version has not been reissued. Nevertheless, Weingartner's emphasis on clear articulation and restraint in the use of rubato and other excesses is apparent. He is considered the first "modern" conductor for those reasons.
