Giuseppe BalducciOpera: Tazia, dramma in one act, first and only performance 15 January 1826, Teatro S.Carlo, Naples.Libretto: Luigi RicciutiDuetto: Che vedo!... Numa immerso - Non più veggo in quel tristo sembianteErsilia: Jennifer Rhys-DaviesNuma: Paul NilonOrchestra: Philharmonia OrchestraConductor: David ParryTazia was a complete fiasco and got only one performance and was a real setback for the poor Balducci, he wrote his fifth and last opera 'Bianca Turenga' in1838. Balducci also wrote five chamber operas, these operas are inventive and technically accomplished. The main reason for Tazia's fiasco lies in the horrible libretto, it was written by Luigi Ricciuti, a minor Neapolitian librettist of the time who had worked with Mercadante, Giuseppe Mosca and Julius Benedict. The story is a love-story, and a thoroughly perverse love-story at that. Ersilia, the daughter of Romolo, King of Rome, is in love with Numa, and he with her. But another woman comes on the scene -- Tazia, the daughter of Tazio, King of the Sabine city of Quire. She secretly loves Num, and appears in the temple to interrupt his marriage to Ersilia, reminding him that he, too, is a Sabine, and declaring that her father has been murdered by Roman hands. Numa overturns the altar and, deserting Ersilia, declares that Tazia will be his bride. The opera ends with an ensemble of confrontation -- for all the world like the midway crisis in a two-act opera -- in which the final stretta, sung by all four characters, reads: 'Oh what in the midst of calm! It will cause dire slaughter among us!'Balducci was well capable of composing melting and lyrical sequences, but if we are to recognise 'the typical Balducci flavour', we should look, rather, at the opening pages, with their unexpected fortissimo chords for full orchestra (including timpani and gran cassa), their rhythmically intricate ostinato figures, their use of chromatic harmonic progressions, and their sudden outbursts of vocal exuberance. Particulary at first hearing, we shall find that this is music which does the unexpected. The effect is often awkward, but it would appear to be an awkwardness which comes from a nervous peculiarity of temperament rather than from any technical inadequacy.
