It is funny that Indians, who are relatively obscure in the international gymnastic scene, have been part of top international teams such as that of USA. A clear reflection on the state of apathy that all sports (except cricket) in India are undergoing, Bhavsar is the second Olympian who is an Indian-origin gymnast.

What a bittersweet day yesterday. Raj Bhavsar finally ended up with the opportunity to compete in the Olympics. Paul Hamm’s gymnastics career came to a crashing halt.

Raj Bhavsar was selected to replace Paul Hamm on the U.S. Olympic Men’s Gymnastics Team. Earlier today, Hamm graciously bowed out after realizing that he would not be able to compete at full strength. It was determined by the Men’s Selection Committee that Bhavsar would give the men’s team the best chance for a medal.

America’s hope for medals in Men’s Gymnastics for the upcoming 2008 Olympics in Beijing solidified when team members were selected: Joe Hagerty, Morgan Hamm, Paul Hamm, Jonathan Horton, Justin Spring, and Kevin Tan. Three replacement athletes were also announced: Alexander Artemev, Raj Bhavsar and David Durante.
