Researchers say tropical forests are increasingly cleared to make way for palm oil crops, leading to a reduction in habitats for many rare species. Palm oil is a common vegetable oil, and is now regarded as a major source of biodiesel, however the researchers question whether it really offers environmental benefits over conventional fossil fuel.

The diesel engine was invented in the 1890's by Rudolph Diesel. He presented the engine at the World's Exhibition in Paris in 1900 as an engine capable of running on peanut oil. Yet it is only in recent times, more than a century later, that the benefits of biodiesel are now being realized.

Thanks for the warning. Bio-diesel anyone? If you know the "demand" is going to push up prices to ungodly levels, then why aren't companies stockpiling supplies now at the lower prices? Why not keep prices stable by using a controlled inventory pricing method and keep things balanced? Why not buy up cheap oil now and put it in reserve?
