Possibly Robby or Bobby, I can't remember. Anyway look carefully for the log upstream from the subject. You just get a quick glimpse. He narrowly avoids one big nasty "LOG! LOG!!". There was no way to see anything coming from upstream while surfing where he was. Being the first higher water in a while it should have been no surprise something came loose. End of a succesful run, playing at the takeout waves. It's one of those things you might not expect but really should have. Lightning, logs, big fast waves-I doubt it gets much more exciting in Taberg NY. I guess the moral of the story is to pay attention like Jim did and have someone looking for wood, maybe discuss a whistle signal for getting off the wave NOW. That could have been bad. For those unfamiliar with Fish Creek this is about a perfect level (3' to 3 1/4')for surfing though I've had a ton of fun at lower levels on previous trips. It has been done at much higher levels. It's gotta become solid 4, 4+ or better at high levels(big boiling eddys,very fast current and huge waves-oh yeah, sharp rocks too). Watch for wood on the eroding sandy banks below the first bridge below the dam(the dam is a mandatory portage if you start at Point Rock). The scenery is great from Point Rock down but the best surfing is below the dam. One more thing just in case, there were at least two rescues on Fish creek in the same day this summer. If you don't have proper whitewater gear and experience don't get on this section of the creek as you will have a bad day. Are you tired of reading yet?
