Sfantul Alexandru Sfantul Alexandru a fost un personaj de seama al primului sinod ecumenic de la Niceea (325). Accede la scaunul episcopal al Alexandriei in 313. In timpul episcopatului se confrunta cu schisma lui Meletie, iar incepand cu anul 319, cu unul dintre cei mai mari adversari ai ortodoxiei, Arie, unul din preotii sai slujitori, care a inceput sa predice o invatatura neconforma cu traditia si credinta Bisericii. La inceput Alexandru a incercat sa rezolve noua tensiune in mod pasnic. Ereziarhul si adeptii sai refuza orice conciliere. Este in cele din urma chemat in fata unui sinod local (321). Aici Arie si adeptii sai vor sustine ca Fiul nu era vesnic, ci a fost creat de "Cuvantul" sau intelepciunea impersonala a Tatalui si, prin urmare, era strain esentei Tatalui, cunoscandu-L pe Acesta in mod imperfect, Fiul fiind creat pentru a fi un instrument al Tatalui la crearea omului. Acestea includ si Sermo de Anima et Corpore deque Passione Domini, in care trateaza despre relatia dintre trup si suflet si despre necesitatea si roadele patimilor Mantuitorului.Dupa parerea lui Alexandru, erezia ariana isi afla sorgintea in subordinationismul lui Pavel din Samosata si Lucian din Antiohia. El afirma, fara echivoc, ca Fiul lui Dumnezeu nu a fost facut "din lucruri care nu sunt" si ca nu a fost timp cand El nu a existat, insa a fost nascut din Tatal, fiind asemenea Tatalui. Cuvantul este Fiul lui Dumnezeu nu prin adoptiune (thesei) ci prin natura (physei). Din aceasta pricina Fecioara Maria este cu adevarat theotokos. La randul Lui, Fiul este unicul nascut mijlocitor prin care Tatal aduce universul la existenta din nimic.Intrucat epistolele lui Alexandru au fost scrise inainte de sinodul ecumenic de la Niceea, nu vom gasi in ele limbajul hristologic care se va impamanteni in gandirea crestina de dupa acest sinod. Cu toate acestea, regasim in ele aceeasi acuratete doctrinara si finete de gandire prezente in formulele doctrinare niceene.

For years I've pondered the area of religion. My father's family is old Pennsylvania Quaker. My mother is Episcopalian. I went to Episcopal boarding school and Episcopal church. But in college I dated many Catholics. In my thirties, it was atheists and Jews. When I married, it was to someone who rarely thinks about religion of any type whatsoever.
