In its time, Victim was considered as a daring a film as had ever been made in England. Taken at face value, Janet Green and John McCormick's screenplay is nothing new: Dirk Bogarde plays a lawyer who agrees to defend an old friend (John McEnery) on a theft charge, only to be enmeshed in a blackmailing scheme. What set this one apart is the fact that the lawyer had once been the male lover of his client. At a time when homosexuality was a criminal offense in England, any film that depicted the gay scene in a non-judgmental light was in for a rough time from the bluenose brigades. What really startled filmgoers of 1962 is that the homosexuals shown in Victim were seemingly normal, everyday blokes, a far cry from the stereotyped "nance" characters common to films. Denied the MPAA seal when it was released to the United States, Victim surprisingly ran into very little interference when it was released to television in the mid-1960s.Dirk Bogarde - Melville FarrSylvia Syms - Laura FarrDennis Price - CallowayAnthony Nicholls - Lord FullbrookPeter Copley - Paul MandrakePeter McEnery - Jack BarrettNorman Bird - Harold DoeNigel Stock - PhipDonald Churchill - Eddy StoneDerren Nesbitt - Sandy YouthJohn Barrie - Detective Inspector HarrisJohn Cairney - BridieAlan MacNaughton - Scott HankinFrank Pettitt - BarmanMavis Villiers - MadgeCharles Lloyd Pack - HenryHilton Edwards - P.H.David Evans - MickeyNoel Howlett - William PattersonMargaret Diamond - Miss BenhamAlan Howard - FrankDawn Beret - Sylvie

John Van Druten's Broadway hit The Voice of the Turtle was purchased by Warner Bros. as a vehicle for...well, in all likelihood, stars Eleanor Parker and Ronald Reagan were both second choices. Reagan is a returning GI who falls in love with Parker, an ingenuous young actress. Circumstances require the hero and heroine to share the same apartment, though the implications don't get much farther than the knowing wisecracks of supporting player Eve Arden. The original play's stars were Elliott Nugent and the matchless Margaret Sullavan, and both Reagan and Parker seem overwhelmed by the responsibility of filling those shoes. Nothing in The Voice of the Turtle (reissue title: One for the Book) is quite as funny as the film's outtakes, which were widely distributed during the Reagan presidency on the basis of a scene in which an increasingly testy Reagan is unable to zip up his trousers.Ronald Reagan - Sgt. Inspired by the novel The Viking by Edison Marshall, The Vikings was lensed on location in Norway under extremely adverse weather conditions. Adding to the difficulty was the fact that star Kirk Douglas and director Richard Fleischer never quite found a common ground, and for years thereafter would hold each other responsible for the film's falling short of its potential. Still, the finished product is quite a feast for the eyes and ears. Douglas, the son of Viking leader Ernest Borgnine, carries on a film-length feud with slave Tony Curtis, who, though he does not realize it, is actually his illegitimate son. This personal battle comes to a head when Douglas and Curtis both lay claim on captured English princess Janet Leigh. The scene everyone remembers in The Vikings finds Borgnine, at the mercy of wicked monarch Frank Thring, defiantly throwing himself into a pit of ravenous wolves. Launched into distribution with one of the splashiest ad campaigns in United Artists' history, The Vikings proved an enormous success; it inspired the 1959 TV series Tales of the Vikings, which utilized the film's props, costumes and scale-model ships. In 1964, The Vikings served as the inagural presentation of ABC's Sunday Night Movie series.Kirk Douglas - EinarTony Curtis - EricErnest Borgnine - King RagnarJanet Leigh - Princess MorganaJames Donald - Lord EgbertAlexander Knox - Father GodwinFrank Thring - King AellaMaxine Audley - EnidEileen Way - KitalaEdric Connor - SandpiperDandy Nichols - BridgetAlmut Berg - PigtailsPer Buchhij - BjornOrson Welles - Narrator (uncredited)

Ed Rendell recently made a stupid remark that Janet Napolitano had no life because she does not have kids. But there were other examples as to Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton that impacted them in the election season. At what point is sexism so pervasive that it is accepted?
