John McCain - Acceptance Speech (Part 6) - Republican National Convention 09/04/08

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presidential nominee of the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential election. McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he nearly lost his life in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. Later that year while on a bombing mission over North Vietnam, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured as a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese. He was held from 1967 to 1973, experiencing episodes of torture and refusing an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer; his war wounds would leave him with lifelong physical limitations. He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and, moving to Arizona, entered politics. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, he served two terms, and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, winning re-election easily in 1992, 1998, and 2004. While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain has gained a media reputation as a "maverick" for disagreeing with his party on several key issues. After being investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as a member of the "Keating Five", he made campaign finance reform one of his signature concerns, which eventually led to the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. He is also known for his work towards restoring diplomatic relations with Vietnam in the 1990s, and for his belief that the war in Iraq should be fought to a successful conclusion in the 2000s. McCain has chaired the powerful Senate Commerce Committee, and has been a leader in seeking to rein in both pork barrel spending as well as Senate filibusters of judicial nominations. McCain lost his bid for the Republican nomination in the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush. He ran again for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, gained enough delegates to become the party's presumptive nominee in March 2008 and was formally nominated at the 2008 Republican National Convention on September 3. How Dare Sarah Palin Insult Community Organizers!
This is work I did three [sic] years ago They haven't talked about the fact that I was a civil rights lawyer. They haven't talked about the fact that I taught constitutional law. They haven't talked about my work in the state legislature or the United States Senate. They're talking about the three years of work that I did right out of college...

Sarah Palin Backlash? 37 Million People tuned In to Watch He
We don’t know if it is out of curiosity or out of sympathy, but Sarah Palin might just cemented her career in Prime Time TV if this presidential election thing does not work out. 37 million people tuned in to watch her convention speech just a million less than Senator Barack Obama’s speech last week at the Democratic National Convention.

Senator Obama on the O'Reilly Factor Part 1
The questions so far have been solidly based on what voters are most concerned about and included 4 out of 10 questions I expected him to be asked...Though that raises an interesting question. If telling Iran about our plans is foreshadowing our actions, how is creating an exacting timetable not the same?...That is when questions about Bill Ayers

Senator John McCain at the Republican National Convention -
"He [McCain] says she. When he speaks about the nation he says she. When Obama talks about the country he says 'our country' or 'this country'. But McCain makes it personal, like it's a being of its own." That was the opinion of a Democrat.

The Perilous Price of Oil
The following is adapted from testimony given by George Soros before the US Senate Commerce Committee Oversight Hearing on June 3, 2008."In January 2007, the price of oil was less than $60 per barrel. By the spring of 2008, the price had crossed $100 for the first time, and by mid-July, it rose further to a record $147. "

How to Celebrate National Grandparents' Day
Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade was the first to envision a day set aside to honor grandparents. She convinced then-Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) to support her efforts. Governor Arch Moore of Marian's home state of West Virginia declared the first statewide Grandparents' Day in 1973, making it the first Sunday after Labor Day. President Jimmy Ca

Republican convention: McCain falls back on biography as he
Republican convention: McCain falls back on biography as he struggles to connect with Republican activists. -- It must be galling for John McCain, who has spent eight years, more or less, running for president, and 21 years in the Senate, that after four days of convention hoopla the only time he truly connected with the Republican activists...
