War (deutsch "Krieg") war eine amerikanische Funk-Band der 70er und frühen 80er Jahre.Die Ursprünge der Band gehen zurück bis ins Jahr 1962, als Howard Scott und Harold Brown in Compton (Kalifornien) eine Gruppe namens The Creators gründeten. 1968 wurde aus den Creators Nightshift, die von ihrem Produzenten mit dem Sänger Eric Burdon von den Animals zusammengebracht wurden.Burdon änderte den Namen der Gruppe in War. 1970 erschien das Album Eric Burdon Declares War, das ebenso wie die Single Spill the Wine erfolgreich war. Es folgte das Album The Black Man's Burdon.1971 verließ Burdon die Gruppe während einer Europa-Tournee, angeblich wegen Erschöpfung. Das nächste Album War war ein Flop, aber The World Is a Ghetto mit den beiden Hits Gypsy Man und The Cisco Kid brachte die Gruppe wieder auf Erfolgskurs. Why Can't We Be Friends (1975) verkaufte sich gut, und der 1976er Song Low Rider auf diesem Album ist wahrscheinlich der bekannteste Titel der Gruppe. Dieser Song lief im Film "Nur noch 60 Sekunden" mit Nicolas Cage und im Cheech und Chong Klassiker "Viel Rauch um Nichts". Cypress Hill borgten sich ebenfalls die Hookline für ihren Hit "Lowrider" aus.1977 landeten War einen Überraschungserfolg mit Platinum Jazz. Jedoch ab 1978 begann die Gruppe sich aufzulösen. Das Album Outlaw von 1982 war nur mäßig erfolgreich. Erst zwölf Jahre später, 1994, erschien das bisher letzte Album Peace Sign, das jedoch floppte.
