A find of recent weeks was this version of the French standard "Seule ce soir" (All alone tonight) which became an instant hit in 1941. Originally sung by the French female crooner Léo Marjane it spoke to all those who had been separated by their loved ones by the wartime events... The song was reoorded by many other artists, even by male singers (as "Seul ce soir" - these versions are very rare).This recording is an orchestra version performed by Bobby Naret and his band. Naret was an accomplished clarinet and saxophone player who was also part of the famed Fud Candrix orchestra. He composed the "Metro Stomp", well known to fans of swing music, which was recorded for Telefunken in 1942 as "U-Bahn" by Candrix and Naret. The late 1930's and war years were the golden age of the Belgian big bands which were very popular. The most famous bands were those of Stan Brenders, Fud Candrix, Jean Omer and Eddie Tower aka Emile Deltour (a one point bands seemed to pop up everywhere). Candrix, Omer, Brenders and Tower recorded for Telefunken and various other labels. Candrix and Omer also toured in Germany and played at the Delphi Palast in 1942 (and Omer again in 1943), Candrix' band also performed the music in "Wir machen Musik", the very popular musical comedy starring Ilse Werner and Viktor de Kowa. Between 1936 and 1943 the Delphi hosted some very popular and "hot" bands : Teddy Stauffer, MAx Rumpf, Heinz Wehner, Ernst van 't Hoff (from Holland) and many others... Despite the official diktat of "Swing tanzen verboten", these bands often continued to play American music : "Tiger Rag" became "Schwarzer Panter"; "St. Louis Blues" became "Lied vom blauen Ludwig" and so on. Alternatively well known German songs got the swing treatment...When I found the record, I was secretly hoping for a swinging version of "Seule ce soir". This was unfortunately not the case, but I was very happy with this dreamy rendition.The video is a motage of clouds combined with pictures of several 78RPM's I have of the song, footage of original singer Léo Marjane, Zarah Leander visiting Paris in 1941 (with Cécile Sorel and Jean Cocteau at her side) as well as footage of occupied Paris.About the record :Olympia (Belgian label) : D5011/mx.16090Enjoy!

GeoEye which is best known for its commercial satellite imagery recently launched the GeoEye-1 satellite which will be the sole online provider of imagery for Google. Mark Brender of GeoEye gives an office tour and discusses GeoEye-1. GeoEye also offers imagery to the U.S. Department of Defense as well as Microsoft among others
