Man Dumped From Wheelchair - 29 January 2008

Paralyzed man says he assumes deputy did not believe he's unable to stand.Hillsborough Sheriff's Office in Florida is investigating a disturbing incident caught on CCTV. It shows a deputy dumping a paralyzed man in a wheelchair onto the ground during an arrest for a traffic violation. The victim, 32-year-old Brian Sterner, who broke his neck 14 years ago and has use of his arms but not his legs, doesn't feel that he's alone in the way he was treated. He's contemplating filing charges against those involved, but he said his hope is to bring about a change in the system."It's not about one deputy, it's not about the sheriff, it's not about the governor," Sterner sad. "It's about this ridiculous — ridiculous — down-pression of people across the world, economic or whatever you want to call it. It's just like Rodney King got beat on the street and I got thrown out of my wheelchair. It happens to people every day. It's just now there's cameras that catch it."The deputy shown dumping Sterner on the floor, Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, has been suspended without pay while the sheriff's office investigates the incident. Three other deputies who witnessed the incident without objection have been placed on administrative leave. "I was appalled," Joe Docobo, the department's chief deputy, told NBC News. "Obviously, the actions are indefensible at every level."

Commentary on Brian Sterner

Response to the surveillance video of an officer dumping a quadriplegic man from his wheelchair in Tampa. In our allegedly civilized society, where we teach our children that if they are approached or threatened by a stranger they should find the nearest police officer, because police officers are supposed to be people we can trust to protect the weak among us, this sort of behavior is incredibly frightening. If Brian Sterner had been attacked like this in a park, a mall, on a neighborhood street, he could have cried for help and dozens of people would have responded immediately. They would have restrained his attackers, helped him back into his chair, gathered his belongings that were strewn about, and called the police. But he was in a police station. Who can you call when this happens in a police station? All the individuals who were within earshot of this occurrence not only violated this man's rights, they also violated the trust of all of us who believe that the reason that we have police at all is to protect the weak from the brutal. The attackers -- and those who did nothing to prevent the attack -- were not criminals or thugs who might be expected to do such a thing, but officers who have sworn to uphold the law, to protect and to serve. As such, they should be held to a higher standard than the street punk who has never earned nor sought our trust. In Florida we have a death penalty. Those who take a life can expect to pay with their own. These officers did not cause this man's paralysis, but they did break two of his ribs. Whatever other punishment they have earned, they should feel fortunate that Florida law does not allow us to break their ribs in repayment for their brutality. But they certainly deserve it, along with enough years of confinement to a wheelchair that they will gain a full understanding of the importance we MUST GIVE to protecting those among us who cannot protect themselves.

Cop dumps quadriplegic out of wheelchair onto floor of jail
A cop has been suspended without pay after callously dumping a quadriplegic onto the floor of the jail. Brian Sterner had been arrested on a warrant from a traffic citation. The cop became agitated when Sterner "refused" to get up during a routine search. Evidently, the wheelchair wasn't enough of a clue that Sterner couldn't comply.

Quadriplegic man, Brian Sterner is abused by Deputy Jones.
When do we as a nation say enough is enough? A Deputy who doubts a man's handicap takes for granted that it is okay to dump him on the floor to check. What was wrong with the other three officers standing around? Why are the officers not charged with abuse, and/or bodily harm? What is with the mentality of more and more law enforcement officers?
