Aileen Carol Pittman (* 29. Februar 1956 in Rochester, Michigan; † 9. Oktober 2002 in Florida) war eine US-amerikanische Prostituierte und Serienmörderin. Ihre Vorfahren kamen aus Finnland.Ihre Eltern, Diane Wuornos und Leo Dale Pittman, ließen sich einige Monate vor ihrer Geburt scheiden. Ihr Vater starb im Gefängnis als sie 13 Jahre alt war. Ihre Großeltern Lauri und Britta Wuornos adoptierten sie und ihren Bruder Keith am 18. März 1960, nachdem die beiden von ihrer Mutter sitzengelassen worden waren.Als 14-Jährige wurde sie schwanger und kam in ein Heim für ledige Mütter. Am 23. März 1971 gebar sie ihren Sohn, der kurz danach adoptiert wurde. Am 4. Mai 1976 heiratete sie Lewis Fell. Die Ehe wurde einen Monat nach der Heirat annulliert.Das erste Opfer Wuornos' war der Ladenbesitzer Richard Mallory aus Palm Harbor, Florida, den sie am 30. November 1989 ermordete. Von den weiteren sechs Opfern konnten nur fünf aufgefunden werden. Die Bar in Port Orange, Florida, in der sie am 9. Januar 1991 festgenommen wurde, wurde in „Cold Beer and Killer Woman" umbenannt.Wuornos gestand, sieben Männer ermordet und ausgeraubt zu haben. Ihre Verteidigung --- angeblich hätten die Männer sie vergewaltigt, als sie (illegal) als Prostituierte gearbeitet habe --- blieb erfolglos. 1992 wurde Wuornos von einem Gericht in Florida zum Tode verurteilt.Während des Prozesses, am 22. November 1991, wurde Wuornos von Arlene Pralle und deren Ehemann adoptiert, die von Wuornos' Fall aus der Zeitung erfahren hatten. Trotz der anfänglichen Hilfe erwies sich die Freundschaft als nachteilig für Wuornos, da Arlene Pralle sowie der unerfahrene Rechtsanwalt eher am lukrativen Verkauf der Story interessiert waren und Wuornos sogar davon überzeugten, das Todesurteil anzunehmen. Ein sehr spät engagierter neuer Anwalt konnte beim Obersten Gerichtshof die Vollstreckung der Todesstrafe nicht mehr verhindern.Die Hinrichtung fand am 9. Oktober 2002 statt. Nach der Exekution wurde ihre Asche in ihrer Heimatstadt in Michigan um einen Baum gestreut.Wuornos' Leben und ihre Hinrichtung war Thema mehrerer Filme, Fernsehsendungen und Bücher. Der Dokumentarfilmer Nick Broomfield drehte zwei Portraits über sie: Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (1992) und Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003). Ebenfalls 1992 entstand unter der Regie von Jean Smart der Fernsehfilm Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story.Der bekannteste Film ist Monster (2003) mit Charlize Theron in der Hauptrolle. Er erzählt Wuornos' Leben von dem Moment an, als sie stark suizidgefährdet ein junges Mädchen kennenlernt, zu dem sie eine intensive Liebesbeziehung aufbaut. Anhand dieser Geschichte wird versucht, ein psychologisch-menschliches Porträt Wuornos' zu zeichnen und ihre Entwicklung zur Prostituierten und schließlich zur Mörderin aufzuzeigen.
