Garry Knox Bennett: Call Me ChairmakerJune 28, 2008 -- September 21, 2008You might want to sit down for this... there is a new exhibit at the Delaware Art Museum that strikes a balance between form and function. Call Me Chairmaker features 52 one-of-a-kind sculptural chairs created by Garry Knox Bennett, one of the foremost contemporary studio furniture makers in America. He is self-taught and began by making a series of clocks. He eventually settled into making chairs. While some of the chairs feature pre-made elements, most of them are made entirely by hand, and are often created without the use of glue or nails. Bennet is a big man, well over six feet tall, but he says he has personally tested each chair for functionality.While some of the chairs are more functional than others, it is the form of the chairs that sets them apart from each other and from conventional furniture. He has drawn inspiration for many of the chairs from other artists and designers, including Frank Lloyd Wright, George Nakashima Conaway, and Charles Eames, and different eras from ancient china to Arts & Crafts to contemporary lawn furniture.The exhibit features 16 versions of the Zig Zag Chair, originally created by designer Gerrit Rietveld. He was initially amused by the design.Bite:While he injects humorous elements into many of the chairs, he says they are not whimsical, which would suggest a lack of deliberation.Bite:Garry Knox Bennett: Call Me Chairmaker is on Display at the Delaware Art Museum through September 21st. The Museum commissioned Bennet to create a chair based on a chair from their Pre-Raphealite Collection. While you're there, take the opportunity to check out America's largest collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art, which recently returned ome to the museum from its international tour. On Friday, September 5th, the Chairmaker exhibit will be the center of a discussion on "crossover artists," the myth of craft, and the shape of contemporary craft today. Elisabeth Agro of the Philadelphia Museum of Art will lead the discussion.
