In January, RAS (Riders Against the Storm), a dynamic husband-wife hip hop duo, wrote "Speak the Truth" through inspiration from the recent film, The Great Debaters, starring Denzel Washington and Forrest Whitaker. They wrote the song and filmed the music video that same month in early 2008.Months down the line, the group was inspired by news of Cynthia McKinney's Presidential candidacy. McKinney was featured in the video montage of the original music video as a symbol of Speaking Truth against all odds.
