this is just a montage i put together in honor of all of the extraordinary horses that have died in 2008.They include, in chronological order: Leprechauns Rowdy Boy and Direct Merger at the Red Hill Horse Trials, Frodo Baggins and The Quiet Man at Rolex Kentucky, Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby, and Theodore O'Connor, the Bionic Pony, as the result of a freak stable accident. All of these horses were superb examples of the highest levels of their disciplines, and this year has truly been a tragic one for the equine community as a result of their deaths.Disclaimer: none of these photos belong to me.The song is "Above the Wreckage" by Dishwalla.

At the very least, Eight Belles' catastrophic injuries during the Kentucky Derby should prompt the horseracing industry to ban whipping. Horses suffering an injury during a race will keep going until their bones are completely shattered because they are being mercilessly whipped by jockeys.
