It spread like wildfire.We were told a bunch of stuff, said Jordan Miller a senior at Mattoon High School. That there were guns in the school. That someone wrote on the bathroom stall we're all going to die at 12:30."A student thought he saw a message spray-painted on the school's driveway.The graffiti was there for two weeks but it took less than two hours for the rumor to make it thru the grapevine.They got scared and told one person and then that person text messaged ten people. Then ten more people, Miller said.One of the problems we had Friday was staying ahead of the inaccurate information that was being texted by students, said Larry Lilly, the districts superintendent.The superintendent says its an excused absence for anyone too afraid to show up to class. And as you can see from this parking lot nearly half the students took him up on his offer.I know that a lot of it was just paranoia, Miller said.Now the district is taking steps to make sure next time it can stem the drama.When inaccurate information is out there it becomes very difficult to keep people informed, Lilly said.The district plans a meeting Friday about how the school can get a list of student cell phone numbers so they can send out mass text messages with the right information.Source: Illinoishomepage.net
