Laika - Uneasy

Lyrics: I disappoint youyou give up on medust of the earth and light of the plainswhen will I know I will see you againyou never miss the water till the well runs dryyou never miss the sun till it leaves the skyonly know when it`s too late to tryyou never love a man till he says goodbyecold wind blew my spirit awayit`s gone for a year and a dayI ought to get out of this placeone of these days one of thesefate tells liesmaybe tonight maybe herewhat can I say when words have no placecan the earth beneath shoulder my weightfire in my headcloud in my mouthold skin don`t you know this facenothing to be gained here in this placefeel a bit falseuneasyraw bony ghost waiting by my doorbiding his time what`s he waitin` forLaika is a UK-based indie/experimental band founded in 1993 by ex-Moonshake members Margaret Fiedler and John Frenett, and producer/engineer Guy Fixsen. The band was named after the first animal to orbit the earth, the Russian dog Laika.Vocalist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Fiedler and bassist Frenett were members of the Too Pure band Moonshake before the group splintered in half after a US tour. Co-chief songwriter David Callahan continued on with Moonshake along with drummer Mig Moreland and the assistance of various guest musicians. Fixsen was a producer/engineer for the group, as well as with legendary bands such as My Bloody Valentine and The Breeders amongst others. On recordings and in live shows, Fiedler and Fixsen shared guitar, vocals, keyboards, and sampling duties. In their first incarnation, the band was augmented by flautist/saxiphonist Louise Elliot and drummer/percussionist Lou Ciccotelli (God, Eardrum). After the group released Silver Apples of Moon in 1994, Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Spleen) had join them as a sometimes second drummer/percussionist.Musically the band is similar to contemporaries such as Stereolab, what may be described as electronica with dreamy female vocals. However, they also rely on a more organic approach to their songwriting with live drums and percussion, together with guitars and samples, creating a complexly-layered and polyrhythmic stew of beats and diverse analogue sounds that defy simple categorization.Elliot and Frenett have played on all Laika LPs except for 2003's Wherever I Am I Am What Is Missing. After their release of their last album, little is known about the status of Laika. There have been no formal announcements of a break up or hiatus.

Supergrass In It For The Money 1

In many ways Supergrass are the Britpop superstars who best embody the youthfulness and positivity supporters generally claim for the movement. Their 1995 debut album, I Should Coco, offered "Alright," as purely feel-good an anthem as even Noel Gallagher had written. Two years later Supergrass are still in their 20s but eager to let us know they've grown. Their follow-up to Coco, In It for the Money, does contain "Tonight," an unambiguous anthem to partying. At the same time, while they haven't transformed themselves into an earnest outfit like the later Manic Street Preachers, Money's more measured approach is accompanied by a heightened sense of drama, if not a newfound gravity. Small helpings of horns and keyboards aid in communicating a finesse, even on a raver like "Richard III," that the earlier record barely acknowledged. While the acoustic-guitar-based "Late in the Day" is burdened by lines about "searching my mind," their larger passions are successfully communicated on "Sun Hits the Sky"--which, tellingly, is more rocking. This is, after all, Supergrass, whose sense of self-deprecating humor is still in force on In It for the Money: in the CD booklet, a potted plant is depicted as their fourth member.Track Listing1. Beggars Opera - 1971 - Act One - 03 - Memory

This band was from Scotland, their name is derived from a novel by the poet John Gray in 1728. The musicians of BEGGARS OPERA were Martin Griffiths (vocals), Rick Gardiner (guitar and vocals), Alan Park (keyboards), Gordon Sellar (bass, acoustic guitar and vocals), Virginia Scott (Mellotron and vocals) and Raymond Wilson (drums and percussion). BEGGARS OPERA made a lot of records but remained acting in the shade of most progressive rock bands.Their debut-album "Act one" ('70) contains fluent and tasteful organ driven progrock with powerful "Sixties" sounding guitarwork. The long track "Raymond's Road" is a splendid tribute to the "classics" featuring Mozart's A la Turka, Bach's Toaccata in d-fuga en Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite on the Hammond organ. The second album "Waters of Change" ('71) is build around the dual keyboardplay of Alan Park and newcomer Virginia Scott and the distinctive, a bit cynical vocals of Gardiner. The nine tracks are beautiful symphonic landscapes with many organ solos, some swelling and glorious Mellotron waves (like The MOODY BLUES and early KING CRIMSON) and fine electric guitarwork. On the third LP "Pathfinder" BEGGARS OPERA seems to have reached its pinnacle: strong and alternating compositions with lush keyboards (Mellotron, organ, piano and harpsichord), powerful electric guitarplay and many shifting moods (even Scottish folk with bagpipes). The band released three more albums but, in my opinion, they sounded far less captivating: "Get your dog off me" ('73), "Saggittary" ('76) and "Beggar's can't be choosers" ('79).: : : Erik Neuteboom, The NETHERLANDS : : :
