Setting off in a Jeep across sandy lahar plains I find myself wondering, ‘What is it like inside a Volcano?’ For 17 years since Mount Pinatubo’s earth shaking eruption few people have ventured. Now settled guided tours will take you into the crater of a volcano.

Mount Ruapehu's lahar has been captured by satellites in striking before-and-after pictures. On March 18 the lahar on Ruapehu's caldera burst, sending mud and rock down the eastern flank of the mountain.

Sunday morning (New Zealand time) equipment on the volcano reported activity, shortly after midday a lahar was visually confirmed. The Desert Road (State Highway 1) has been closed by police as part of the lahar warning system and automated barriers closed off access as per the emergency plan.

I've just heard from my brother in New Zealand...looks like Mount Ruapehu's crater lake collapsed. There's not a lot of news just yet but I'll be updating info as it comes in. Links are on my blog.

New Zealand - The Department of Conservation says a lahar from Mt Ruapehu's crater lake could happen as soon as next month but it says there is no cause for alarm at this stage. DOC, police and Transit have worked together to make sure the lahar's path is controlled and a plan has been put in place to ensure there is no repeat of the 1953 tragedy.
