As more and more companies are now choosing to use LAMP as an alternative to expensive proprietary software (mainly because it lower cost and provide freedom from lock-in) I strongly suggest that small businesses also consider looking into using open source and portable applications simply because of their scalability and cost saving benefits.

Some graphs of "value" as a function of "ugliness" show how testing creates the "value spike" which locks us into an ugly code-base. We need to learn how to escape from this lock-in.
