NY Gov. Paterson Has Procedure for Glaucoma

PlusNY Gov. Paterson Has Procedure for GlaucomaNY Gov. Paterson Has Procedure for GlaucomaThe Associated PressNew York's Governor David Paterson has undergone an emergency procedure for glaucoma, a condition that did not threaten his already extremely limited sight but caused agonizing 'migraine-like symptoms.' (May 20)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:Dateline: New York][Notes:File vid Patterson] New York Governor David Paterson has undergone an emergency procedure for glaucoma. That's hours after admitting himself to a hospital with a severe headache.Paterson is legally blind. The governor's office says he was diagnosed with acute glaucoma in his left eye... and had a routine, outpatient laser procedure to relieve pressure on that eye.Doctors say Paterson has already left the hospital .... but will have another procedure in a few days to prevent glaucoma in his right eye. They say neither procedure will have any long-term impact on the governor's overall health. Paterson lost sight in his left eye ... and much of the sight in his right eye after an infection as an infant. The 54-year-old can see shapes and usually recognizes people as they approach. But he can read for only a few minutes at a time ... with the text held close to his face. The Democrat was sworn in on March 17 ... days after former Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal. He had served as Spitzer's lieutenant governor for 14 months. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)

Whore Nation (Spitzer & Kristen), Mumia Abu-Jamal

A Cause Bigger Than Any ScandalMarch 17, 2008 By Amy Goodman http://Truthdig.com "Monday was a strange day in Albany. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was scheduled to give a major address to close to 1,000 people, most of whom were women or teens. They were gathered to support and lobby for a reproductive rights bill in the Empire State Plaza's strange, iconic building known as The Egg. It is said to be the most progressive such bill introduced by a governor, guaranteeing a woman's right to an abortion, among other protections. New York was one of only three states to legalize abortion before Roe v. Wade. JoAnn Smith, CEO and president of Family Planning Advocates of New York State, organized Monday's event. She talked about the pre-Roe days: "Women were dying—doctors saw it in the hospitals, clergy saw it in the families they were serving, in real people's lives. So it was really the clergy and the doctors who were doing the early organizing. They made New York safe for women as they made their choices on reproductive health care." In fact, the first abortion clinic was run by clergy in New York City, called Clergy Consultation Service. Now, nearly 40 years later, with a U.S. Supreme Court ever closer to overturning Roe v. Wade, Spitzer was working with women's rights activists from around the state to update New York state's law. The New York state Assembly was also slated to vote Monday on the Healthy Teens Act. Rabbi Dennis Ross, in Albany to push the bill, said: "The Healthy Teens Act ... would provide comprehensive, age-appropriate, medically accurate and 100 percent truthful information about sex to teens. We believe in knowledge. We believe in people knowing about themselves and about their world. And the Healthy Teens Act would give teens that information and capacity that they urgently need." Urgently, indeed: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just released a report that one in four girls and young women between the ages of 14 and 19 has a sexually transmitted disease. One in four.... People had come in from all over the state. A number of young people, teen peer counselors, had driven in from Buffalo, hours away, where, 10 years ago, Dr. Barnett Slepian, an obstetrician-gynecologist who performed abortions, was assassinated in his home, in front of his wife and kids. The assassin, James Charles Kopp, captured in 2001, was affiliated with the anti-abortion group the Lambs of Christ. Back at Monday's events, amid red, white and blue balloons above every table, from which people would soon head out to lobby their legislators, it was announced that Spitzer had canceled, with rumors that he was sick. Lt. Gov. David Paterson took the podium. In his typical, casual, folksy style—he doesn't read from a teleprompter, as he is legally blind—he lauded the citizen activists, the young people especially, for coming to their state capital to take an active role in their government. After his talk, he held an impromptu press conference. The local Fox TV affiliate was dogging him, asking him how he would respond to critics of the bill who claimed that it would force Catholic hospitals and individual health-care professionals to perform abortions against their will. He didn't flinch, responding immediately: "That's not true. There is a conscience clause." When asked if he, as a Catholic, had discussed this reproductive rights bill with his cardinal, he said he had, several times. Paterson said he had told the cardinal: "I am pro-choice. I go to bed at night, I wake up in the morning, with a clean conscience." He spoke with the same forcefulness he brings to other issues like gay rights and police brutality. Nine years ago, in March 1999, after African immigrant Amadou Diallo died in a hail of 41 police bullets, then-Sen. Paterson was arrested at New York City Police Headquarters as he protested police brutality. He wrapped up the news conference just before noon Monday. New York's progressive, blind, Catholic, African-American lieutenant governor, David Paterson, might not have known it then, but he was mere minutes away from receiving the call with the news that Spitzer's alleged use of prostitutes was about to go public. Soon the storm of the Spitzer Sex Scandal enveloped Albany....The governor has resigned in disgrace, he has let down his wife and his daughters, he is bringing unknown consequences to the prostitutes he hired, and he let down millions in New York state whose causes he championed. But it is not about one leader, or one body, but about the body politic. It is about grass-roots movements, the only sure way to protect the rights of women and girls. *************FREE MUMIA AND ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS!http://FreeMumia.comhttp://PrisonRadio.org*************

1ST BLACK NY GOVERNOR SWORN IN - (REUTERS)

Monday, March 17, 2008David Paterson was sworn in as New York's first black governor Monday with a speech that was part bipartisan call-to-arms, part stand-up routine.Without mentioning the name of his disgraced predecessor, Eliot Spitzer - who formally resigned his governorship amid charges he hired a prostitute - Paterson called on state lawmakers to put aside old divisions and get back to work."There is trust that needs to be restored, there are issues that need to be addressed," Paterson told a jammed gathering of state legislators and invited guests in the ornate state capitol."And all of us - as we set to it - must be aware of one truth that rises above all else It is that New York families are more challenged today than they ever were yesterday."Paterson - who was lieutenant governor and a state senator for 20 years - walked into the chamber to a standing ovation with his wife Michelle at his side. Their son Alex, 14, and his stepdaughter, Ashley, 19, bracketed the couple.Chief Judge Judith Kaye delivered the oath of office at exactly 1:13 p.m.In a speech that was at turns forceful yet conciliatory, jovial yet serious, Paterson, who is legally blind, worked the audience like a polished professional, offering praise for political friends and foes alike. He referred to GOP Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno - Spitzer's main political nemesis - as "my good friend" and joked about their upcoming dinner plans."I'll go, but I'm going to take my taster with me," he quipped. He pulled off a dead-on impersonation of Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose plodding speaking style is known to all but imitated by few (at least in his powerful presence). He recognized everyone from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and state controller Thomas DiNapoli, both Democrats, to Republican Assembly minority leader James Tedisco and the independent Michael Bloomberg - all as if they were his best friends.Along the way, he offered warm words for former Gov. George Pataki; Sens. Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton; former mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins; and most poignantly his father, former state Sen. Basil Paterson. But the 53-year-old Paterson shifted quickly into a more serious tone that acknowledged his accidental path to the governorship but also left no doubt as to who's in charge."In so many ways we woke this morning to a not-so-ordinary day," said Paterson in a speech he delivered with no notes or other prompting aids. "But in one way we woke this morning to a New York dawn that is like every one that came before it."For today, like we always do, in spite of the obstacles and regardless of the circumstances, we move forward.""This transition today is an historic message to the world," he added, "that we live among the same values as we profess and that we are a government of laws and not individuals.""Today, we can be proud of our democracy."Spitzer did not attend the ceremony - a final symbol of his swift descent from chief executive of the Empire State to national punch line. It's likely he would have been soundly booed by state legislators had he appeared, many surmised.Federal prosecutors must still decide whether to pursue charges against Spitzer. The married father of three teenage girls was accused of spending tens of thousands of dollars on prostitutes - including a call girl "Kristen" in Washington the night before Valentine's Day.(REUTERS)
