Spearheaded by such noted artists as Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Djavan and many others, MPB celebrates the birth of modern Brazil and its most prolific musical era since the dawn of the bossa nova.The 1970s began as a transition from the controversial and politically repressed art form known as tropicália, when Brazilians were grappling with a less-than-tolerant military regime (that had taken control in 1964) while trying to maintain peaceful resistance. Tensions grew in the late sixties as violence erupted between the opposing groups, and leading artists (along with politicians, students and intellectuals) were arrested and tortured. Many of the prominent tropicália figures would find relief in exile, but returned to Brazil as political amnesty was granted, among them Brazil's current Minister of Culture and celebrated singer/composer/guitarist Gilberto Gil. Into the 70s, many artists who had already set the tone as innovators of the Brazilian music scene began to further develop their sound while incorporating elements of Western popular music, in particular American rock and jazz.História da MPB - Música Popular Brasileira Podemos dizer que a MPB surgiu ainda no período colonial brasileiro, a partir da mistura de vários estilos. Entre os séculos XVI e XVIII, misturou-se em nossa terra, as cantigas populares, os sons de origem africana, fanfarras militares, músicas religiosas e músicas eruditas européias. Também contribuíram, neste caldeirão musical, os indígenas com seus típicos cantos e sons tribais.Nos séculos XVIII e XIX, destacavam-se nas cidades, que estavam se desenvolvendo e aumentando demograficamente, dois ritmos musicais que marcaram a história da MPB : o lundu e a modinha. O lundu, de origem africana, possuía um forte caráter sensual e uma batida rítmica dançante. Já a modinha, de origem portuguesa, trazia a melancolia e falava de amor numa batida calma e erudita.Na segunda metade do século XIX, surge o Choro ou Chorinho, a partir da mistura do lundu, da modinha e da dança de salão européia. Em 1899, a cantora Chiquinha Gonzaga compõe a música Abre Alas, uma das mais conhecidas marchinhas carnavalescas da história.Já no início do século XX começam a surgir as bases do que seria o samba. Dos morros e dos cortiços do Rio de Janeiro, começam a se misturar os batuques e rodas de capoeira com os pagodes e as batidas em homenagem aos orixás. O carnaval começa a tomar forma com a participação, principalmente de mulatos e negros ex-escravos. O ano de 1917 é um marco, pois Ernesto dos Santos, o Donga, compõe o primeiro samba que se tem notícia : Pelo Telefone. Neste mesmo ano, aparece a primeira gravação de Pixinguinha, importante cantor e compositor da MPB do início do século XIX.Com o crescimento e popularização do rádio nas décadas de 1920 e 1930, a música popular brasileira cresce ainda mais. Nesta época inicial do rádio brasileiro, destacam-se os seguintes cantores e compositores : Ary Barroso, Lamartine Babo (criador de O teu cabelo não nega), Dorival Caymmi, Lupicínio Rodrigues e Noel Rosa. Surgem também os grandes intérpretes da música popular brasileira : Carmen Miranda, Mário Reis e Francisco Alves.Na década de 1940 destaca-se, no cenário musical brasileiro, Luis Gonzaga, o "rei do Baião". Falando do cenário da seca nordestina, Luis Gonzaga faz sucesso com músicas como, por exemplo, Asa Branca e Assum Preto.
