Dominic Finley - MISERY

Dominic is the bass player for CUTTING CREW, COMBINATION HEAD and JIM DIAMOND as well as being a respected session bass player he has recently started a solo career as a singer songwriter first solo CD 'Avalon' is out now.Most of the new wave of singer-songwriters seeking to copy the success of the melodic songs with clever lyrics from the likes of David Gray and Damien Rice have emerged either from the ranks of the bedroom studio guitarists or tend to be opportunist band leaders who have sensed which way the commercial winds are blowing. Dominic Finley feels most affinity towards another strand of intelligent songwriting which starts at Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney in the sixties and flows through early Elton John, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Michael Franks (whose songs have been recorded by Manhattan Transfer, Diana Krall, The Carpenters & Patti LaBelle) and Jim Diamond through to Ben Folds and Roddy Frame (Aztec Camera). Their songs are characterised by a greater harmonic complexity and feed from a wider range of influences (including soul, jazz and classic R&B) than most of the strummer-singers as he starts his career as a solo singer-songwriter.Since 2005 Dominic has been a member of a reformed version of the Grammy nominated, multi-million sellers Cutting Crew, still featuring singer Nick van Eede.. The band has toured heavily playing in the US, Canada, Europe and the UK and some of Dominic's personal highlights have included playing alongside such famous names as Supertramp (on seminal German music show, 'Rockpalast') , Robin Gibb, Midge Ure and Howard Jones. The band is currently working on a new project and Dominic potentially has a couple of co-writes on their forthcoming album.At the same time he has also been collaborating with esteemed producer and keyboard wizard Paul Birchall and fellow Cutting Crew member Gareth Moulton in the prog-rock, Yes/ELP-inspired band, Combination Head. The last decade has also seen him carving out a fine reputation as a session musician who can "bring something more to the table" than just his bass playing, due to his knack with catchy arrangements and his accurate harmony vocals.It should come as no surprise that Dominic should draw from such a broad palette when writing his songs as, although this is his first real outing as a solo act, he has already spent half his life playing a variety of musical styles in various groups with a background in classic pop music which draws from such diverse sources. For example, as a member of The Transparents in the mid-nineties, he recorded an EP and toured with Travis, Dodgy, Shed Seven, The Long Pigs, Baby Bird, Cast and Heavy Stereo amongst others. Subsequently, Dominic also toured and recorded as bassist with the Jim Diamond Band; as well as writing and publishing two tutorial books -- one of which has a foreword written by legendary musician Herbie Flowers -- perhaps best known to the general public for his distinctive bass lines on 'Lou Reed's' 'Walk On The Wild Side' (trivia fans!).When Dominic is asked to give a few pointers as to how his songs sound he is as evasive as most songwriters when pressed for comparisons, but does concede that his producer thinks he sounds a bit like, "...a cross between Aztec Camera,Paddy Mcaloon, prefab sprout, crowded hous, Steely Dan, Gilbert O'Sullivan and David Bowie. Apparently my voice is similar to Aztec Camera front-man Roddy Frame, but as I've never heard any of their records I wouldn't know!" Pushing him further he admits that his songs should appeal to fans of songwriters such as Gilbert O'Sullivan, Jim Diamond, Gordon Haskell and Michael Franks He finishes on an up-beat but realistic note: "Obviously there is amazing talent out there and I'm a small fish, but I'm good enough to have a part in the pond."

LITTLE BOY SAD (1965) by MPD Ltd

MPD Ltd were an Australian band formed in 1965, who were wildly popular in their day, but only lasted around 18 months. They consisted of Mike Brady (lead vocals, guitar) Pete Watson (bass) and Danny Finley (drums). The name came from taking the first letter of each of their first names. This single released in 1965 was a cover of Johnny Burnette's 'Little Boy Sad'. It was their first single and their biggest hit. They continued to have varying success until they broke up in 1966. Their demise was not helped by a trip to England to seek fame and fortune and personal tensions in the band towards the end. Mike Brady went on to be a successful songwriter and creator of advertising jingles. He wrote the Australian Football anthem, 'Up There Cazaly', one of the biggest Australian singles of all time. Sadly, Pete Watson's health deteriorated and he died in 1972. Danny Finley continued in the music business variously as a musician, manager and executive. There is no video of this song (or any other MPD Ltd songs?), so I have done my own video featuring images of the band. Comments are invited.
