Here's my essay if you're interested =PMy experiences abroad, so far, have been brief and from the tourists point of view. About four years ago, my family took a trip to Cancun, Mexico, for a week. It was my first experience in another country according to my memory (also my first conscious experience flying). We did not spend much time in the city, in fact we spent most of our time snorkeling on the coral reef off of Isla Mujeres and visiting Mayan ruins, including Chitzen Itza and Tulum. But it was only a week, and I did not pick up any Spanish besides gracias. We never really socialized outside of our five-person family unit. After that trip, I stayed in the United States until two years ago, when we went on another family trip to the city of Quebec, Canada, for the lovely ski slopes of Mont Sainte Anne, for one week. We spent a small amount of time in the city where I was able to exercise what little French I knew at a patisserie. As an aspiring anthropologist, I do not want to be a tourist when I go abroad to Cork, Ireland. I do expect to feel that way at first, but my hopes are that I take part of the culture of Ireland home with me in ways more enriching than five cameras full of memorable photographs. A friend of mine, who recently graduated from Elon University, studied abroad in Athens, London, and Peru during her college career. She came out of each experience enlightened and with a renewed self-confidence that lead to her graduation and then on to South Africa to help educate and protect children in school for a summer. I expect my experience in Cork to help me build upon my self-reliance and confidence over the course of the semester. I also expect to come away with a broader and more understanding perspective on world-issues, because, while I believe that how the United States affects other countries is important, I have never truly known how other countries perceive these issues. I did spend a week in Cancun, and a week in Quebec, however, all I did was enjoy the view and read a little bit on some Mayan history. They were fun experiences, but I feel I only participated in the culture of tourism. Whereas in Cork, I will participate in the culture itself by learning and mingling with Irish and international students. I consider this program to be my first in-depth ethnographical venture- that I will be immersed in cultural ideologies set against my control subject of my own American ideologies, and I will learn new ways of communicating and understanding. I have been going through the courses offered, and I would love to take an archeology course that focuses on medieval Ireland and includes class trips to some of the places within the discussion. The idea that instead of learning about a place from thousands of miles away, I will be learning about the place while actually experiencing it, excites me incredibly. Currently a sophomore, I will be majoring in Art History and Anthropology, and I believe that my time studying in Cork will help me improve academically, and help me go on to graduate school afterwards. To acquaint myself a little bit with Cork, Ive been reading the Corkman online, a local newspaper for the city. Ive placed Cork as my first choice because I do not know much about it, because I do not expect it to be as bustling with tourism as Dublin is, and because I do not know what to expect outside of how I may be affected by this city that is relatively unknown to me. Because I expect it to be a completely new experience, and I do expect Cork to be the gateway to the world for me.
