Police Arrive in FULL RIOT GEAR to Intimidate Picnickers

I stared in disbelief. I had been flying a kite, one of many Roger of Veterans for Peace had made with various antiwar or social justice slogans on them - he had a total of 15 of what he called his "message kites." He had also arranged to have someone donate 100 blank white kites for children to decorate and fly, you can see some kids flying the small white kites at the end of the video. You can also hear the police helicopter overhead - there was at least one circling or hovering overhead the entire time I was there.The punchline is when I turn around at the end and reveal how small and pathetic the picnic is. The weather and the long week of protests and intimidation conspired to keep the numbers low. Like I joked with the reporter who walked by later, "I guess they're preparing to put down the world's smallest riot." The cops lounged around their vehicles, totally decked out in full gear including the billy clubs and dozens of white zipwire handcuffs they all carry for mass arrests. They remained there the entire time I was there until I left for the ill-fated march I attended later.Of course, it completely beggars the mind that they felt they needed a squad car and 4 FUCKING VANS FULL OF COPS IN FULL RIOT GEAR to, what, "monitor" this picnic? It was publicized as a family event and people were encouraged to bring their children. Did they think a riot was going to start with children there? The people in the antiwar movement are not the ones who don't give a shit about children! And even if we wanted to start a riot, we were across the Mississippi River from the Excel Center full of its preening Republican maggots. If we wanted to grab our children and go on a murderous and destructive rampage, they would've had plenty of time to stop us before we reached the Excel Center. We all know why they were there. They were there to keep this thing small. They were there so parents walking to park with their children would turn around and walk back to their cars, because suddenly their thoughts are clouded with concern for their children. They start to think, "Maybe there's one of those anarchists here. Maybe someone will do something, and the police will move in, and my children will be hurt." It's not an unreasonable thought, the police had hardly been impressing anyone with their restraint so far that week.They were there to intimidate. To frighten people away and to depress and demoralize the people who attended.Hope it was fun for you cops, striking fear into the hearts of children and adults who think it matters whether we attack countries for valid reasons or not, who care about the people who die for our moronic and hateful policies.
