On July 22 during the official Welcome to Toronto ceremonies for Jonathan and Terry, 12 year old Luke Burrows took the stage in front of several hundred people at Toronto Nathan Phillips Square to thank Jonathan for what he is doing.Luke is a prime example of the benefits of the combination of early diagnosis and Intensive Behavioural Intervention therapy (IBI) (also known as Advanced Behavioural Analysis -- ABA therapy) which then allows a child to start communicating and ultimately learning. Luke was diagnosed with Autism at age 3. At the time of diagnosis he was on the severe end of the spectrum of Autism. He has been in IBI therapy since that time and began to speak at the age of six. Now at age 12 he has flourished into a brilliant, compassionate and interested young man. Luke was inspired by Jonathan and his dream to help children like himself. Luke found out about Jonathan on Facebook and through his mother connected with Run the Dream when Jonathan and Terry were in Toronto. He felt so passionate about what Jonathan is doing he raised over $100 on his own initiative, from his allowance, all of his peers at the New Haven Learning Centre, and family. His mother tells us that only two people have had this kind of affect on Luke, both of them in such a positive way. They are Jonathan Howard and Dr. David Suzuki. With role models like this and continued IBI therapy there is no limit to his future which every day looks brighter and brighter. Luke's mother, Norrah Whitney, believes that the positive awareness made possible by the efforts of Run the Dream, and the many other people and organizations who are advocates for the cause, will result in more and better research into Autism and universal access to services and therapy for all persons with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in Canada.Luke is, and has been for several years, a student at the New Haven Learning Centre in Toronto a facility renowned for its work with children with Autism. As any reader will imagine, Luke's presentation of his speech on July 22 had a major impact on the assembled crowd. We were all impressed by Luke's willingness and ability to publicly thank Jonathan, and the evident benefits of being able to provide the proper support and services to children and families who are dealing with Autism. With the cooperation of the New Haven Learning Centre who shot the video of Luke re-creating his speech, and with the permission of Luke's mother, Norrah, we are proud to present it for all to see and hear.

Last week's rerun of The Office finished on an unusual note, with an “In memory of” dedication displayed over the end credits. It featured a fuzzy video of 15-year-old Nathan Robinson playing his rendition of “The Office” theme song on his piano. Robinson, who died a few weeks ago from flu-related complications, was a huge fan of the show.
