This is the first firing of my 577/450 Martini-Henry. It's a MkI, 1874 so it's 134 years old. I was a little apprehensive about that first shot. The recoil is very mild, but we all felt quite a shock wave. This weapon came from the Royal Armory of Nepal, and has probably not been fired in at least 85-90 years. It was the first dedicated breechloading rifle of the British military, adopted in 1871. They were last used by the British during WWI, for shooting at German zepplins.

In 1990, Jim Ziolkowski was trekking across Nepal when he happened upon a two-day school dedication ceremony in a remote village. Moved by the deep appreciation of the villagers for their school, Jim returned to his home in New York and founded Building With Books, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building schools in developing countries...

From human to holy and back again. The last Hindu monarchy in the world is no more. Does the centuries old practice of Kumari where 3 year old girls are worshiped until they start their period have anything to do as a sign that the new government in Nepal is not really new after all?
