Since "Mr. Invincible #20 - Hot August Nights" roars by in less than thirty seconds, I think some explanation is due."Mr. Invincible" was the focus of a series of public service announcements that were aired on Newstalk 780 KOH in Reno, Nevada; Sean McDevitt and Phil Galbraith wrote, produced and performed these traffic safety spots from 1997-2000. For the uninitiated, Hot August Nights is the city of Reno's tribute toAmerica's love affair with classic cars and rock 'n' roll, featuring tunes and entertainers from the '50s and '60s, and it runs during the first week of August, annually. 780 KOH was the "official" radio station of the event (and it may still be at this time, I'm not sure); starting in 1998, we thought we'd do something special for the duration of the event. We decided that we'd change from our usual talk/news format, and turn back the clock to a time when AM radio was king. That's right- old music, old commercials, even old-fashioned news updates, and we'd change all of our air names and turn this into a real nostalgic event- recreating a time when cars were enormous, hamburgers and malts were staples of the American diet, and vinyl records were played over the radio in glorious mono. Our call letters were changed from 780 KOH to 78 K-H-A-N, Sean McDevitt and Phil Galbraith became"Johnny Mack " & "Phil Fairlane", and the real kicker was that we had the opportunity to cruise the streets of Reno in a 1965 Ford Thunderbird- the real deal, restored and refurbished with some beautiful Hot August Nights artwork emblazoned on the hood and doors; I think Phil and I wound up on several video cameras belonging to tourists from all over the country aswe cruised that beautiful baby through Reno and Sparks. (For a few years during Hot August Nights, we even enlisted the help of the late Art Roberts, of legendary WLS Chicago fame; what a treat it was to have him as our host as he took us back to those golden days of yesteryear.)The Mr. Invincible spot Phil and I produced came together, I seem to recall, in just minutes; it occurred to us that maybe we should do something special for the temporary format change, and so we flew into action, making sure to include references to Little Deuce Coupes and -of course- the Ford Edsel.

A developer's dream becomes South Lake Tahoe's nightmare. The city council dug the idea, the developer dug the hole... and then left. The real surprises were the deep red states that have Obama in the lead: Arizona, Arkansas and South Carolina. Arizona is the shocker. I can't imagine that the Grand Canyon state will go against its senior senator in November, but the fact that it is following neighbors, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico into potentially competitive status, is news.

What a great organization! Very small yet highly effective in the Southern Nevada area (i.e. Las Vegas, Henderson, & Laughlin). On June 3rd, they were featured on KVBC Channel 3 News for a rescue effort where they rescued six kittens, only five weeks old, that had been sealed into a block wall with insulating foam. Just a wonderful group of people!
