Warren Geier, pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church and Vicar Luke Smetters, the BLC Pastoral Intern.Northern Michigan news reporter Greg Peterson has the story.-------Easter - and the special days and weeks of Lent before Easter - are an important at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, Michigan.During Lent - Wednesday night services nclude a drama put on by youth and adult members of the church.The service is preceded with a soup dinner.Holy Week and the three days of Easter - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter - comprise the central worship experience of the church year. A Seder/Passover meal is held on Maundy ThursdayThe meal is shared with the families of young people who will receive their first Communion that night.The Maundy Thursday service includes the symbolic washing of feet like Jesus did for his disciples..Maundy Thursday concludes the stripping of the altar.A Tenebrae Service is held on Good Friday - during which the "Passion according to St. John is read.During the service, the church becomes increasingly dark.And finally - the service ends with a single candle burning in a dark church.Saturday night - the nighty before Easter - includes the lighting of a new fire outside the church.The outdoor services include the lighting of a new pastoral candle that leads a candle light procession into the church.With Candles flickering in the dark church, services are held including readings and a renewal of Baptismal Vows.The Easter Vigil service lasts all night for some - who are awaiting the sunrise - and the Holy Easter Celebration.The Easter morning festival and celebration - the highlight of the church year. Sholom Dovber Lipskar is a Chabad rabbi who founded the Landow Yeshiva Center in Miami Beach in 1969, he has served as its principal and dean of its elementary, academy, and high school studies. Rabbi Sholom Lipskar also founded The Shul of Bal Harbour, Aleph Insititute and the Educational Academy for the Elderly in 1981. As The Shul's head Rabbi he is both the spiritual leader and educational programmer for all ages. Since receiving rabbinical ordination from the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva in Brooklyn in 1968, Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar has worked as an emissary for the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Rabbi Sholom Dovber Lipskar is recognized as an international leader bringing Torah values to people from all walks of life.http://www.theshul.org The Shul is one of the country's most unorthodox, Orthodox synagogues, a popular center for both Jews who are returning to their Jewish roots & experienced congregants. We are presently in the midst of the Jewish festival of Passover. Each year we commemorate the historical events of the Exodus from Egypt and the subsequent birth of the Jewish nation. The highpoint is the Seder meal, where we sit down with family and friends and recite the traditional centuries-old Haggadah text.

Was at the food store today, and on the way out I picked up something I’d never seen in my life: an ad-filled, corporate sponsored “Maxwell House Passover Haggadah.” For non-Jews reading Pinko (hi Dad!) a Haggadah is basically a prayer book for one of the most sacred Jewish holidays. This one is just plasterd with Maxwell House logos.
