Maya is the world's most powerful integrated 3D modeling, animation, effects, and rendering software. That's why top feature film, animation and video artists, game developers, visualization professionals, Web and print designers rely on Maya. And because Maya is based on an open architecture, all your work can be scripted or programmed using a well-documented and comprehensive API (application programming interface), or the embedded MEL scripting language. In this VTC course, John Park - Character Technical Director with Walt Disney Animation Studios, teaches the fundamentals of Maya 8.5, while showing "practical" examples on how to streamline your workflow. Ray-tracing can well be the next killer-app that provides the next quantum leap in PC gaming realism, just like the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics accelerator did in the '90s.

"Ray-tracing is one of the big topics gamers and graphics enthusiasts should pay special attention to these days."

We don't know where Nvidia's can of whoop-ass went but at Siggraph the Green Goblin of Santa Clara finally did something that at least looks like a swing directed towards Intel. The fabless graphics company demonstrated real-time GPU ray-tracing running off four of its multi-GPU Quadro Plex 2100 D4 Visual Computing Systems.

Whereas other methods of creating graphics have to generate special effects, shadows, bloom, and other popular lighting techniques are all occur as a natural product of raytracing. The problem is that raytracing is very resource intensive, making it great for pre-rendered applications, not-so-great for on-the-fly applications like games.

Now that we've seen how to treat some simple surface properties, we will try to add a few more details to our scenes. One of the simplest way to add details is via the use of textures. We will detail here two concepts, one is the procedural texture and the other one is the environment mapping. Third part of our ray tracing in C++ article series.

AMD has published two YouTube videos that show off its voxel-based rendering technology. First video is shaky-cam of Ruby, while the second one is an interview with Jules Urbach, guilty party for enabling Ray-tracing technology on GPUs of today.

This is a revolution about to happen in gaming and ATi just made that huge leap in showing off what it's already possible to achieve with ray-tracing. Check our the other videos in youtube, the famous scorpion that was dugg not too long ago is there also.
