For Ontario residents the chilly days of mid October might seem like an unlikely time to encounter a snake. The Eastern Garter Snake however, is one of the most cold hardy reptiles in the world. Its dark coloration, which absorbs radiant heat from the sun, works in conjunction with several inner mechanics. These adaptations allow the Garter Snake to stay active in cooler weather conditions. For more information on snakes and snake conservation please see:www.savethesnakes101.co.nr

The Black Rat Snake is Ontario's largest snake species. It is also one of the Provence's most rarely encountered snakes. The Black Rat Snake is found in only two small populations in southern Ontario. The smaller population is located to the west, around the Carolinian Forest region. The second population is to the east, around the the Frontenac Axis region. The snake is in such decline throughout Ontario, that it is federally listed as a Species At Risk. Sadly the snakes large size(up to 8 feet)makes it a target of persecution by fearful people. Despite its intimidating look, the black rat snake is a harmless creature, preferring to avoid confrontation. For more information on snakes and snake conservation please see:www.savethesnakes101.co.nrNote:The Black Rat Snake is listed as Specially protected Reptile under the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Under this act snakes are protected from being harassed, killed, captured, bought, or sold. The snake also receives additional protection under the Federal Species At Risk Act. This act includes prohibitions against killing, harming, harassing, capturing or taking species at risk, and against destroying their critical habitats.
