She told a good lie, which came more easily these days and didn't get into any trouble. She listened to her iPod all day and walked around in a trance as she was daydreaming. She usually did that, daydreamed and worked without realizing it, but today was sooo different. She actually met Joe. And he actually spoke to her and was thankful that he met her. It was better than any of her previous daydreams she'd had about him. And she thought about what it was gonna be like when he worked there. She was going to get to see him 4 days a week at LEAST and talk to him like he's a normal person on a regular basis. Normal.... She could see how he longed for that one word. She knew how he felt, she often felt the same... but different. As much as she tried and pretended to be normal, she never felt like she was. She had so many "issues" and didn't think anybody could ever understand. And she was good at hiding her problems from even her closest friend. Her best friend was Heather and she'd known her since she was 10. But Heather didn't really even know Shannon. She was gonna have to hide her un-normal self from Joe as well. How on Earth could he ever accept her the way she really was? Before she left she made sure she talked to at least 3 of the bosses about her "friend" Joe. And they all said they'd personally look into it. And as she drove home, she wondered what kind of dream she might have about him and what he was doing at that very moment. She was sure he was probably really excited about having this new life. She was so glad she got to help him achieve it. If she could even take credit for that. But she finally got home and actually fell asleep on her couch almost immediately. Which was weird coz she usually tried to stay awake just to daydream. She was in the middle of some really weird dream about this boy she used to go to school with when the phone started ringing. She woke up and looked at her clock on the VCR. And when she saw it said 5.30am she wasn't about to wake up to answer it. But whoever it was, and she knew perfectly well who it was, didn't give up so easily and called right back. So she got up.Shannon: Hello?Heather: Hey! What are you doing?Shannon: Sleeping. Duh!Heather: Oh, sorry. I got some shit to tell you!Shannon: *She hated conversations that started like this. But with Heather, that was usually how it went.* Oh yeah? *She said it as unenthusiastically as possible, but Heather didn't notice.*Heather: Yeah, oh my gosh. Ok, so this guy at my work, ran over one of my supervisors on his forklift on purpose and the cops came and was gonna take him to jail, but it turns out that my supervisor was doing drugs! He had to do a drug test for Workman's comp as soon as he got ran over and he FAILED! So now he's fired! I HATED that guy. *She started laughing hysterically.*Shannon: Crazy. Is that other guy getting fired?Heather: No, they decided to let him stay since he said it was an accident.Shannon: Dang. If that happened at my job, they'd both be fired. But oh well, I'm gonna go back to bed.Heather: Ok, well just give me a call tomorrow.Shannon: I will. *They both knew she wouldn't, she never called anyone.* Bye.She was dead tired, so she went back to sleep. She started having the most wonderful dream. It was about Joe, only it looked like Kevin... dreams are weird. It took place in the future and Joe/Kevin looked to be about 25-26 and was extremely handsome. She was pretty sure they were married and they were talking to Denise about something... she didn't know why she thought it was so wonderful, but she was always in love with any dream that had to do with any of the Jonas Brothers. No matter how boring or weird or vague it was. Her Joe/Kevin dream eventually faded into another dream and that one into another and before she knew it, the alarm was going off. But she wasn't as mad at it as she usually was. Chapter 5Joe got back to the car with Kevin and Nick and had a huge smile on his face. He felt really good about this and was ready to get started.Kevin: She seemed really nice.Joe: She was, she IS! She's really gonna get me hired on. I can't wait!Kevin: Well, Joe, if you can, become good friends with her. Maybe she could show you around town and help you get used to this stuff.Joe: I was already thinking that. I wonder how old she is... She said everyone here is like older than her.Nick: Well that's good. Not a lot of people should recognize you and go crazy.Kevin: That's awesome! Ok, let's get going. We have to meet that lady in about 45 minutes.Nick: We got your job out of the way, now lets get your apartment out of the way.Joe: Lets!They drove further down the highway into North Kansas City and followed the directions that the GPS was giving. As they reached the apartment complex Joe's eyes got really wide.Joe: Wow! This place looks really good! He jumped out of the backseat of the car and ran up the entrance of the main office. His mood had completely flipped since he left Musicians Friend and he was no longer mopey and depressed about things. The lobby of the apartments was really nice and clean and looked like it had been decorated by an older lady. As it turned out, the manager of the complex WAS an older lady. She met Joe halfway across the lobby and smiled at the young man before her. She thought he looked really sweet and not at all like a lot of the young riff raff that come to look at her apartments. And as she saw Kevin and Nicholas follow in behind him, she thought they looked just as sweet. Joe was busy looking all around him, thinking about how cool it'd be to live there. So Kevin went up to the woman and greeted her.Kevin: You must be Bella.Bella: Are all three of you looking to move into an apartment? Kevin: No, just him. *He pointed to Joe.*Bella: Well, ok, let's go have a look at the apartment. Let me go and get the right key first. Oh, I forgot, I grabbed it before you showed up. *She laughed and Kevin laughed with her.* Alright lets go. *For a 74 year old woman, she was still very young at heart. Everyone in the complex loved her and there wasn't one tenant she disliked. She only gave apartments to people she felt like she could get along with.*They walked a few buildings over from where the main office was and walked up a flight of stairs. Every apartment seemed to have a balcony or a patio. And since Joe would be on the 3rd floor of the building, he'd be getting his own balcony.Bella: This is building G. And your apartment number is 6 if you decide you like it. But, it's a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom. It's all ready for you to move in. You got a lot of furniture?Joe: No... actually, I don't have any furniture. *He'd just realized.*Bella: Well, that's ok. You know you could call Rent-A-Center and make payments and have pretty much everything you need delivered. If you call them tonight, I'm sure they'd be able to get it out here by tomorrow.Kevin: That's a good idea, Joe.Bella: You can go online to pick out what you want. I'll let you use the computer down in the office.Joe: *First Shannon, now Bella. People in the real world were a lot more helpful than he remembered.* Thanks! *He smiled at her, and she smiled back.* Guys, could you help me pick some stuff out?Nick: What else are we gonna do while we're here?They followed Bella back to the office and she let them on the computer. And by the time Joe was done he had everything he needed for his new apartment.Joe: Estimated delivery time is 10am tomorrow... Hey, Bella? Do I get to move in tonight?Bella: Yeah, you can. Where ya gonna sleep though?Joe: I can sleep on the floor, I just wanna stay in my apartment.Kevin: No, Joe... you can stay in the hotel with us.Bella: *She could understand someone wanting a bit of freedom for the first time.* I can loan you some blankets for the night so you're not sleeping on the hard floor.Joe: Wow! Thank you! It's cool guys, you can stay at the hotel and I'll sleep on the floor. But you have to come back tomorrow!Kevin: We're not leaving for a couple days. I'll try and book our flight tonight and then your car is all yours. But I'm taking it tonight.Joe: Go ahead. But, I think I'll go up and relax for awhile. *He stood up and gave his big brother and then his little brother a hug.* I'll see you tomorrow!As they walked away, exhilaration swept over him. The nervousness he felt earlier had gone away thanks to Shannon and Bella. And even though he was sleeping on the floor in an empty apartment, he slept better than he had in quite awhile. And he finally felt like he had control over his own life for once. Chapter 4His hair was short, he had glasses on and was dressed like how he used to dress. His jeans weren't skin tight and they were ripped in various places. She tried not to die right there in the parking lot as she knew he wasn't expecting ANYONE to recognize him. So she stood there taking him in for a second. She could tell he was nervous, and everything made sense to her.Shannon: Yes?Joe: You work here, right?Shannon: Uh... yeah! I do. Are you looking for a job? *She crossed her fingers in her head and hoped to God he was gonna say yes.*Joe: Yeah. But, I don't know if I'm qualified or not.Shannon: What? You've never had a job? *For some reason, she really had the urge to help him lie so he wouldn't scare off.*Joe: No, I never have.Shannon: Oh, well, how old are you? *Duh!*Joe: Almost 20.Shannon: What, are you some rich kid that's been spoiled all his life?Joe: No! *He thought about it, he hadn't really worked on a back story.* Well, I guess, kinda.Shannon: That's ok. What's your name?Joe: I'm Joe. Jooooones. *It's not the same as Jonas...*Shannon: Joe Jones? Sounds funny together... Well, I dunno Joe... How badly do you want to work here?Joe: Is it a good place to work?Shannon: It's easy, and most of the people here are pretty nice and a lot of them are older than me. *She threw that in in case he didn't want to work around a bunch of young people.* I like it.Joe: Well, then I guess I'll give it a shot.Shannon: Ok, if you PROMISE me that you'll work hard and do a good job, then I'll put in a good word for you. So, have you ever filled out an application before?Joe: Actually, no.Shannon: Well, come on inside. I'll help you. *She remembered that there had been three people standing outside and thought, Kevin and Nick. She looked over at them.* Are those your friends? Did they wanna apply too?Joe: Oh, no... those are my brothers. Here, I'll introduce you to them. *He started walking towards Kevin and Nick and Shannon could hardly believe how calm and cool she was acting when she really felt like asking Joe to hand her her heart pills. Not that she had heart pills, but that's what she felt like.* Guys, this is... what's your name?Shannon: Oh, right! I'm Shannon Davis. *She smiled really big and held her hand out for Joe to shake. He shook it and as soon as he touched her she felt like saying, "Oh my goodness, sparks!"Joe: Shannon these are my brothers... Kevin, *She shook his hand.* And Nicholas in the car there. *Shannon could tell he didn't fully approve, but he was polite enough to shake Shannon's hand.*Nick: It's nice to meet you, Shannon.Shannon: You too, Nick! Well, Joe, let's go fill out that application. *She shook Kevin and Nick's hands again as she said goodbye and Joe followed her into the front doors of the building.* Go ahead and sit over there, I'll get you an application. *She went up to the front desk where the night crew security guard was working.* Hey Steve, can I get an application for my friend here? Steve: Aren't you like 30 minutes late?Shannon: Well... yeah! But, I'm gonna help him out with this real quick and then get back there.He handed her a clipboard and she walked over to where Joe was sitting. He was really nervous, and she could see it all over his face. He was even sitting on his hands. Everything about him said, "Oh my gosh! I'm not sure if I can do this". And as worried and anxious as he looked, he still made Shannon's heart melt. She was no longer mad or sad and she really felt like she'd be able to help him. It wasn't hard for her to determine what he was after... normalcy... and she was good at pretending that! She sat down next to Joe and helped him fill out his application. She noticed that he wrote Jonas on the paper, but decided not to point it out. After he was done, she wrote her name at the top so that the manager would know she recommended him. Even though she still planned to speak with them anyway on his behalf.Joe: So that's it?Shannon: That's it! *She lowered her voice so that Steve wouldn't hear her.* It was nice meeting you Joe Jones. I'll see you soon! *She smiled a friendly smile at him. Although her eyes had love in them.*Joe: *He smiled back at her. He felt lucky that he had run into her, otherwise he might not have ever come in. They both stood up.* Thank you so much! Really. *He leaned in and hugged her tight, which surprised Shannon a little. But, she went with it and tried not to drool on his shoulder.*Shannon: Anytime, Joe Jones.As he walked out of the front doors to his brothers, Shannon prayed that it wouldn't be too long before he got hired.
