The accident happened at 8:30 Saturday morning, Feb 13, 1992- "that fateful day," as Lois refers to it. It was the day before Valentine's Day, one day after her son's 16th birthday and a day the Brown family will never forget. A light snowfall dusted their Bronco and the road before them as Lois, her son, Matt, and younger daughter Maryanne, headed toward Kittanning, to bowl. Lois and Matt were in the front wearing seat belts. Maryanne, age 6 who had forgotten to attach her seat belt, played with her toys in the back seat. Suddenly, the Bronco skidded across an icy patch and swerved to the left. When Lois tried to regain control by turning the wheel, the vehicle shot back across the lane and over the guardrail, plunging more than 30 ft into the ravine below. In a futile attempt to climb out of the ravine, Matt lost his glasses and Lois kept sliding back , unable to gain a foothold. Two young men yelled to them from above. Having witnessed the accident, they were relieved to discover all three passengers alive. By lowering a rope, they pulled the family up the steep slope and back onto the road. Then, they wrapped paper towels around Maryanne's left index finger, which was almost completely severed from her hand, and waited with them until the ambulance arrived. This article was published by the Indiana, PA Healthcare Corporation and Indiana Hospital - Annual Report Issue, Fall 1993

When I was growing up, we knew it was a really special occasion if Mom made Red Velvet Cake. It appeared at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and certainly on Valentine's Day. The rich red brightened any holiday table, and that wonderful chocolate flavor mixed with the creamy smooth boiled frosting was so decadent!

ScienceDaily (July 1, 2008) — A cold slice of watermelon has long been a Fourth of July holiday staple. But according to recent studies, the juicy fruit may be better suited for Valentine’s Day. That’s because scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.
