A short, 20 minute-or-so hike on an abandoned section of Crater Rim Drive through lush fern and ohia forest brings one to spectacular views of the Kilauea Caldera, Waldron Ledge and Pu'u Puai at the mouth of Kilauea Iki Crater. This hike is one of the few places where bicycles are allowed, and the generally shaded road makes for a pleasant hike.

The platform overlooks the remains of a trench that flowed full of lava at the time of the eruption, delivering million of gallons of molten fluid. When trenches such as these become roofed over, they are called lava tubes and the cooled remains are preserved as caves, such as Nahuku, or Thurston Lava Cave up on Crater Rim Drive.
