Come Gather Round Me, Parnellites....

Come, Gather Round Me , Parnellites...A Ballad To Be Sung With Much DrinkBorn in Braintree, Essex, in January 1846, Katharine Wood was well connected. She first met Charles Stewart Parnell in 1880. She had been married to Captain William O'Shea , but to a avoid a life of unhappiness they were separated or in the process of such a separation. Parnell loved Katharine O' Shea deeply. The couple had three children.Although accounts differ as to how Captain O'Shea felt about his wife's intrigue , he vacillated between challinging Parnell to a duel in 1881 to remaining publicly silent about it until he filed for divorce in 1889. In any event the love- affair brought down Parnell, who had agitated for Irish freedom so successfully, that he became known as the 'uncrowned king of Ireland'. One of his devoted supporters was John Stanislaus Joyce, father of James Joyce. Honourable though the affair was, it was used by the moralists of the day on both sides of the Irish sea to retard the Irish Home Rule movement and, of course, destroy the secular Irish leader. it also had a negative efffect on Stanislaus Joyce. It made him virtually 'berufsverboten' or unemployable. Stanislaus' loyalty to Parnell meant challenging the Irish Catholic bishops and their endless supply of unforgiving liege zealots. James Joyce, who watched the effects of the secular failure of Parnell against both Victoran morality and Roman Catholic conservatism, never forgot how easy it was for the religious in Ireland to control the people. But in this Ballad , it is William Butler Yeats who rounds most effectively on the Irish bishops. Yeats, a conservative, did not like the RCC's dishonourable interference in Irish political life -- and in his poem addressed to the suppressed 'drinking classes', he makes his feelings clear. (If we contrast RCC 'values' a century later , we find that the Catholic Bishops are as protective of widespread clericical pedophelia as they had been denunciatory of Parnell's very natural proclivities). In 1914 Katharine O' Shea published a biography of Parnell as "Katharine O'Shea (Mrs Charles Stewart Parnell)". To her friends she was known as Katie O'Shea. Parnell's righteous enemies, however, called her 'Kitty O'Shea'. This was, according to Wikipedia, in order to damage him personally, ' because at that time "kitty", as well as being an Hiberno-English version of Catherine/Katherine/Katharine, was also a slang term for a prostitute. She lived the rest of her life in relative obscurity, and is buried in Littlehampton, Sussex, England.' Wikepedia :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitty_O'Shea

The Lake Isle at Innisfree by W. B. Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee;And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,And evening full of the linnet's wings.I will arise and go now, for always night and dayI hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,I hear it in the deep heart's core.

Johnny Flynn's 'A Larum': Irresistible Drama Set To Music
How appropriate that English singer and songwriter Johnny Flynn is also an actor who counts Yeats and Shakespeare among his influences. It shows on his debut, "A Larum" (Lost Highway), an album of theatrical folk songs so vivid, they sound ready to burst off the record to act themselves out before your eyes. Yet his is a close, intimate approach,

Create or Become Enslaved
William Yeats described successful learning when he advocated building on people’s strengths . In Yeat's words. Learning is more the lighting of a fire than the filling of a pail. Wm Blake said: I must Create a System, Or be enslav’d by another Man’s (human’s). I will not Reason or Compare, My business is to Create. You?
